Frank Altman was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1897 and moved to Boston with his family as a child. Frank worked as a mechanic, first at Ford Motor Company and then at his own garage, until the stock market crash of 1929. He then worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance until he retired. In 1920 he married Ethel Task, who was born in the South End of Boston in 1898. They had two children, Barbara (1923-2005) and Stanley (1927-1952.) The Altmans were members of Temple Mishkan Tefila and later, Temple Emeth in Brookline.
Barbara Altman graduated from Simmons College with a degree in library science and worked for a variety of local libraries, including the Boston Public Library and Beth Israel Hospital Library. Her brother Stanley Altman was a musician who died shortly after receiving his degree from Columbia University in 1952.
