JR and Jacob Rabinovitz

Joseph Rabinovitz (JR, 1878-1967) and Jacob Rabinovitz (1885-1967) were sons of Nachman Schleime and Yente Rabinovitz. JR was the first to join the grocery business, co-founding the Standard Grocery Company in 1898. When Economy Grocery Stores was founded by his brothers Jacob and Julius Rabinovitz several years later, JR sold his interest in the Standard Grocery Company and began investing with Economy instead. JR helped his brothers turn around the struggling new business, and by 1920 the Jacob, JR, and JR’s son Sidney were the company’s sole owners. JR married Lottie Fox in 1900 and they had four children, Sidney, Norman, Jeannette, and Irving. Jacob married Ada Kaplan, and they had daughter named Janice.
